Sunny Beach

On the Bulgarian coasts of the Black Sea, at the crossroad of Europe and the Middle East, Sunny Beach is the new El Dorado of the seaside mass tourism, until it was nicknamed “The Ibiza of the East”.

On this brighten beach up almost 300 days per year, everything is gather and thought to satisfy the vacationer: the geographical situation, the climate, the coastal development and the recent constructions of seaside resort with a capacity of almost 600 000 beds with the all-inclusive formulas.

Russians, English, Germans or still Norwegians come here in family or among a group of friends to spend affordable holiday ( 1000 euros on average per week for four people), and enjoy the abundant activities and cheap alcool omnipresent in the city.

At night, on the promenade, mixing with distinction families seeking counterfeits  souvenirs and young party-goers participating in Pub Crawls: these bar rounds where each establishment offers un shooter, ending in club until the early hours of the morning.

At the height of tourism, consumerism and mass leisure, Sunny Beach leaves an exhilarating and whirling imprint. A bubble of life, sunshine and excess in which you get carried away before being taken from dizziness.

Sunny Beach, Bulgaria - 2018

Lewis Joly and Guillaume Lassus Dessus met at the Icart Photo School, in Levallois, in 2012. Friends since then, they both chose to mix their photographic approaches, to confuse them in this reportage in Bulgaria. "Sunny Beach" is the first report of a series that the authors wish to make in all the countries bordering the Black Sea. With an approach questioning the identity of the territories around the crossroads of cultures and civilisations embodied by this Sea, the idea of working together became obvious.
